After looking at the previous article learning that connected passed pawns always defend each other, one may wonder what happens if the passed pawns are separated by one or more files. As we will see, the answer will not always be that straightforward as in some cases, the defending side will be able to save a draw.

The following only applies if the stronger side is not able to support the pawns with his King (if he can, that is an easy win of course).

Passed Pawns Separated By One File

This first position involves two passed pawns, one file apart.

Passed pawns that are one file apart are therefore almost as strong as connected passed pawns, at least if the opposing King is in front of them. 

Pawns More Than Two Files Apart

The evaluation of the position becomes dramatically trickier if you consider passed pawns separated by two files.

Here again, the win was very easy for White. The difficulty will increase with our next position.
